NAMI Capital Region, NY is an expanded product of NAMI Rensselaer County.
Prior to 2011, NAMI Rensselaer was controlled by NAMI Hudson-Mohawk under receivership. During that time, there were two other main NAMI affiliates in the Capital Region area: NAMI Columbia and NAMI Greene.
NAMI Rensselaer and NAMI Columbia were mostly engaged in public meetings, while NAMI Greene largely focused on support groups and had numerous supports in the community.
In 2011, a few NAMI Greene commuters from Rensselaer got together with the Vision of reinvigorating NAMI Rensselaer to host support groups and expand other services beyond public meetings. This began at an August, 2011 meeting at the IHOP in East Greenbush with Mary Beth Honsinger, Mary Crowley and Bonnie Nasca.
Since then, NAMI Rensselaer has hosted countless support groups, Family to Family, Peer to Peer, In Our Own Voices, Ending the Silence, and much more.
NAMI Rensselaer began transitioning in 2016, and was officially recognized as NAMI Capital Region in 2019, with NAMI Greene joining its chapter.
